I haven't heard of it :/ but anime is a thing in Missouri. we have a Japanese festival soon, anime cons, some anime stores although some sell other fandom things within them, and there are anime and manga clubs at some of the schools and libraries

I believe that's about 40 or so minutes from where I live but then again I'm really bad with measuring time though lolz 5 minutes can feel like 1-20 minutes to me

I've been wondering about anime/manga fans in Missouri myself. I've searched a couple times for local groups/clubs and never found much. Is anyone near the Kansas City area?

I don't think I am. My neighbor who goes to Kansas City a lot takes a train out there usually and when he goes he stays in a hotel instead of going home.
I know around September and October that there will be an Anime get away or something and a Japanese festival and about a month or so ago was Anime stl. And I don't know about in Kansas City But Arnold, St. Louis, and Fenton schools have Anime clubs, and My library/rec center has an anime/manga club. Also I've found 4 stores that sell anime/manga/otaku stuff, but some of them also sell other fandom things too.

0.o that's a 6 hour train ride across the state. I'd probably go by car since it's a couple hours faster (and I love driving my car anyways). There's Naka-Kon out here in Overland Park, KS, but would it be as good as the events out in St. Louis? If not I might consider making the trip for a future event. It's been years since I've been out there so it might be fun. Naka-Kon is literally 1.8 miles from my apartment though, so I've got nothing to lose if I check it out.
There used to be an anime store around here, but unfortunately it closed down a few years ago. The anime club at the high school I went to was obviously not as cool as whatever you've got out there. I had never even heard of some of those events until now, since we basically just socialized and watched anime.
I haven't hung out with my anime friends since high school, so if several Missouri/Kansas fans wanted to get together and form a little group for going to events or just hanging out I'd love to join and get back into that stuff. I don't know if anyone here has heard of or uses Meetup, but it might be a good way to keep track of a group since it'll remind members of events, handle RSVPs, etc. I think it would be a good supplement to this site if anyone is serious about meeting people here to go to events and hangout with.

I know this may seem random but...
Hi! It's nice to meet you guys! My name is Lisa and I'm your average twenty-one year otaku who is from Kansas City, MO. I've joined this site back in 2012 and here I am again two years later!
Okay, you caught me. The truth is I was lurking MaiOtaku and noticed there are more and more people who are from Missouri. So, I decided to log back in. : ) I thank missy_mcgardin.
I've never been to Naka-Kon so unfortunately, I can't tell you guys whether or not it's worth going to. I've always wanted to go back in my high schools days with my friends but I never got the chance. On top of that, I haven't hung out with my friends since high school as well which means I'm in the same boat as you, Kitsune Kouta. I've graduated high school back in 2011.
However, I will be attending Motaku this year! Motaku is an anime convention held in Kansas City. The dates are August 8, 9 & 10, 2014. Check out their site! http://motaku.org/
This will be my second anime convention. My first anime convention was anime blues con which is a convention held in Memphis, Tennessee but this is a completely different story.
Anyway, I'd love to hang out with you guys!

I don't know if it's worth it either. so far I've only been to one convention which was Anime stl, 2014 but I plan to go to anime get a way and the Japanese festival. And at the moment I still am in highschool but only 4 of my friends are anime fans and only 1 is an actual otaku :/ And I'm not in my schools anime club because all they do is watch a few eps. of anime and then move on next week leveing the choice up to you if you want to continue it or not. And I can't keep up with that. Anyway so I don't know what they socialize about I just know that they watch parts of anime. Also it sucks that the store near you shut down :( And I just ask people if they want to meet me at the events I'm going to or some other place like the stores, mall, or library/rec center so the app wouldn't be required by me. But if you seriously think of driving out here I'd google the events and look at them in the past to see if you think it is worth the trip.

I suppose I ought to say welcome back then, but I've only been here a few days myself.
Naka-Kon looks fairly large and well established. A little more so than Motaku anyways from what I've been reading, though my Google-Fu may not be strong enough to draw that conclusion yet. Naka-Kon's not until next March though. I've actually been to the convention center it's held in twice, for my undergrad and graduate degrees, so I know first hand that it's a pretty nice place. There's also lots of great places to eat around here that are very close by, so anyone traveling for the convention should find it satisfactory.
Naka-Kon, and perhaps other conventions, has a group discount for having at least 7 people. If we can find that many around MO/KS it would probably be worthwhile.
I may check out Motaku this year, but I would like to have more people to roam around with. If there were 4 or 5 of us that'd be ideal. I haven't attended a convention yet, but it looks like it'd be cool to go to one with a group. I haven't seen many details for the St. Louis anime getaway so I'm not sure on that one yet. It looks like a fairly recent deal, assuming animegetaway.com and the associated Facebook page are the same as what you're talking about missy_mcgardin.
I also participated very sparingly in my school's anime club. They basically did the same thing you're talking about, so my friends and I got bored and just did our own thing instead. They didn't plan anything really, just got together after school, talked, played a random anime, rinse, repeat.
I also just found that there's another anime store even closer to my apartment. The other one was by my old house and of course I haven't checked around since I moved. The one here is called Anime Source KC, and it looks like they participate in both Naka-Kon and Motaku. Probably way cooler than the one that closed down. There's hope for KC after all :)
As long as it's a big event, I'm actually Ok with driving out to St Louis on occasion. Kansas City and St Louis are probably the main places close enough to me to be worth traveling to for stuff like that. Maybe Cosplacon in Jefferson City too, since it's not quite as far. That being said, it doesn't have to be limited to anime conventions either. There are also some great gaming conventions that would probably be a lot of fun. If we get a reasonable group together we could probably car pool for some of the events to save everyone some money.
The Japanese festival is the one at the Missouri Botanical Garden right? I may check it out as well, if a handful of people are going.
