Salty tears of frustration streamed down my checks into the steaming mineral water that surrounded me. No one noticed; no one cared. I was just another stranger in the crowd drifting along in Glenwood Pool. There was only one difference; I was alone. Everyone else in the pool seemed to have someone, and everywhere I looked couples were kissing! If someone had been surveying the whole thing they would have found happiness in every corner ... then they would have seen me; sulking in my corner of the pool with fat, old, wrinkly, bald men swimming past me repeatedly. My heart felt like it was being squeezed as hard as the cold bare hands of the one I once loved could squeeze. Heartbreak is the only thing in the world that could possibly make me not want to have a heart anymore. I remember spending what seemed like eternity sitting on the beach together, watching as the colorful fireworks explode overhead with the faint smell of gunpowder in the air; holding her hand in mine was the only thing that mattered in the world. Her dark brown eyes gazed into mine and seemed to burn into my memory forever. Her brown hair swung in front of her face, only to be pushed away by her hands that looked as if they could only belong to an angel. The slight breeze pushed sand towards us while she held on to me as if her hands couldn’t ever let go. When the words were finally spoken to end the relationship, the one I had thought would be never-ending, my body had a very short moment of shock when I didn’t seem to feel anything, think anything, or hear anything other than the first time she said, “I love you.” I soon realized it was really over, and everything I had ever said ran through my head as if to taunt me.
