The Phantom 2040 was very deep. The Phantom questioned his right to be a vigilante and that he might be contributing to problems in the city. Also the show went into subject like mass extinction. So I can't really agree that modern shows automatically have a better story. I always found Deadpool annoying. The venture bro got old and tired for me. I have watched One punch man but Saitama was dull for me.
