I guess the sheer size of the event also played a huge factor in it. I've only been to 2 conventions; Kami con and Anime weekend Atlanta. Out of the 2 I'd say that Kami was more organized. AwA had some of the panels that had high interest didn't have enough room to hold people so some were cut off after waiting in line for about 30 minutes. At least they warned people about what was happening.
Kami con was a bit of a disappointment because the panels (besides the VAs) felt like they were rushed. Even the vocaloid concert people were really excited to see was just a recording. The staff did a fine job keeping the lines flowing nicely and things ran according to schedule well a little bit off like 10 minutes or so but it was acceptable.
Getting to meet Steve Blum, Beau Billingslea, Wendee Lee, and Melissa Fahn was like a dream come true so I was pretty much able to deal with the lack of creative panels. I've been going to cons to pretty much meet up with people and see other's interest in certain genres of anime. So I'm probably a lot more lenient with reviews, but, I also feel like the size of cons usually effect how well ran it is to an extent. Volunteers are great but really should be kept with simple jobs like keeping a line moving or checking for IDs, that way the more experienced people can do what they need to without much hassle. but that's my 2 cents on it.

I've been going to Otakon the past 5 or so years now, and it was just horrible. They basically got all new volunteers, and no one knew what they were doing, and since it was the 20th anniversary it was completely packed. I've never seen that many people at a con. The only thing I liked as that I finally got to meet Todd Haberkorn- I've seen him lots of times at previous cons, but never made it to his autographs sessions. But even that was a pain because we had to be in FOUR hours prior to the signing! Katsucon was last weekend, and we got in line to meet Greg Ayres 30 mins before and my friend and I were like seventh or eight in line. Otakon last year was just horrible, and Katsucon fell through this year too. So, needless to say, I'm probably not going to either anymore, unless it's a day trip for a voice actor since they're both 30-40 mins from where I live.

Oh wow really!?!?!?
My friend told me otakon was the one convention i shouldn't miss. I actually appreciate the honesty and it makes me wonder, if they keep getting bigger, how come they are unorganized. I went to Kami con this year for the VAs of cowboy bebop and sailor moon. It was really small and they were behind schedule a bit, but getting to meet those guys made my trip worth while.

It's pretty small but I'm still learning :p. I accidentally found out how to follow threads and stuff >w<. I found a lot of cool people on here too so it's pretty cool to stay in touch with these guys pretty much daily. They actually have a tiny chat and a skype group so I'm also up to date with the active members hehe. So how's it going for you? I also see you go to otakon I'm trying to make it there myself this year!
