It's pretty easy. If you want to talk in the public forums then go to the top left corner of your screen and click on the little square icon there and you should see the option to go to the chat rooms and you just go there and talk in the text box at the very bottom of your screen once you enter a chat room. With private messages all you do is click on the message box that appears on someone's profile when you both add each other as friends. Which is better depends on what kind of conversation you want to have. If you just want to talk randomly with people that public chat rooms are perfectly fine for that. If you want something more personal than talking on someone's wall like we are right now is good but if you want to really get to know someone then the private messages is best because then you can talk about whatever you want and only the two of you will know about it and then you won't have to worry about looking for their reply like you would have to in a public chat room.
