It came out in the late 80's so its old and the anime came out In the mid 90's the anime is pretty good just couldn't stand the saxphone muisc that how you knpw its old lol but yeah i preferr the manga more. its one of the best love story i read. and a lot of sad stuff happen because the the war and miaka best friendd yui becomes the priestess of seryu which there at war with plus yui has a problem with miaka. what's really sad is 4 out of the 7 die. :( i won't say anymore but yeah when i say stort bool its actually called the book of the four gods. there's also a prequel to fushigi yuugi its called fushigi yuugi genbu kaiden that was great also. ^ยท^

Its about a girl who gets sucked into a story book and she becomes the priestess of suzaku. for her to get out of the book she needs to find the 7 suzaku warriors and summon suzaku the beast then she will be able to have three wishes but little did she know after all 3 wishes are granted she will be eated by the god suzaku.
