azumakazuma @azumakazuma Pen and paper RPG's are cool, regardless of how you overcome an event, you still get all or most of the credit for it. Say, a band of thieves come to steal your things, if you talk it out with them and get them to rethink their lives and be politicians or something, it is the same as fighting and defeating them; Especially if you convince them to throw down their weapons and gear upon realizing their new path on life.

azumakazuma @azumakazuma What you just went through was an example. Now imagine it with more rules and guidelines, as well as your own character that you spent time creating just the way you like it. Success rates are decided by rolling dice and adding various bonuses you have from your character and equipment.

azumakazuma @azumakazuma "Pen and paper RPG" is a role playing game where nothing is managed by automated processes like how they are in video games. It is a more story-based style of choose-your-own adventure.

azumakazuma @azumakazuma If you want to convince someone of something, it is your Wisdom and Charisma VS their Will and the ridiculousness of the subject. If I'm standing right in front of you, it would be a lot harder to convince you that I was blue than it would be to convince you that the rock that I hold in my hand was once used as a paperweight by royalty. (and is thus worth something)
