My cousin has a Filipina mother. She knows Tagalog OK, it's definitely a very distinct language. I only know Dinuguan as a word though. Chinese is very grammatically similar to English, its a Subject, Verb Object language so you say "I like pie" unlike some languages like Korean where its more like "Pie I like" or "I Pie like" in literal word order. I only know what some kanji means, not itss pronunciation or anything, so like 狼 or 月 I know mean "Wolf" or "Moon/Month".

So is English or Japanese your first? I like the hiragana system since it makes it hard to make typos, I mean　く and き look radically different yet they're side by side on a keyboard. My goal isn't to be able to write hiragana, katakana or kanji well (I tried learning Chinese in high school -easier than spanish if you don't count the hanzi, or kanji. But because of my prior knowledge of hanzi I can understand some kanji.

Thats nice of you to say. I plan on learning some more Japanese before I arrive, self-studying it currently. I would like to study abroad a summer there if Florida Tech will approve the trip. Would love to go before I leave school!
