@napalm, being a cop must be a horribly stressful job, so unless you have good nerves, dont become one
but im pretty sure you could get in, just need to pass the physical (then again iv also heard that people have failed and still became officers, so theres that)

I could (would) work out if I choose to go that route so im not as worried about the physical aspects. Its totally the split second decisions that can change ebtire lives that gets me.
Like if I screw up I could ruin someones life, invalidate otherwise incriminating evidence or be the next "racist" cop all over the news

i think the fact that you worry about that stuff means you'd be a good officer
but if you do do something wrong, the police are basically a brotherhood so the chance of you being prosecuted is little to none
i mean, if your willing to risk your life and risk the chance your kids might grow up without a father, accept that you may have to end someones life, accept that the person's life you end may be innocent, and accept the possibility that your precinct could be corrupt and having to deal with the moral ramifications of your fellow brothers in blue doing things you don't agree with (its slim but it happens, there are cases of cops being "shunned" for standing up to the corruption in their precinct and its sad) then yeah
it's a lot to consider, but it probz pays good and you get a heep of benefits

Theres as much an intrinsic reward as monetary and the brotherhood aspect is very appealing to me. Having a partner day in and out and shit like that.
The whole corruption things a whole 'nother thing entirely. Im not sure how id handle some stereotypical cop situations such as...
The flirty woman trying to get out of a ticket, the minority playing a race card, the obviously wrong asshat i just caught running a light but is giving me shit
In each kinda case theres how I shoullldd handle it vs how i woooulldd handle it

we'll have to agree to disagree on that, but i do think you should not go into the job with that kind of connotation, as that's just begging for trouble
well they do a psychological test, and if you pass technically your ready to be a police officer
i think the most important part of being a cop is having patients, manners and good nerves
if your confident in those then id root for you to go and try it out

Im not as worried about getting there as much as how things are day to day when I am there. Everyone has preconceptions about things that can get squashed pretty quickly once actually experienced.
Id also struggle with my on duty weapon whether Id be forced into standard issue or be able to pick/provide my own weapon. I dont care for the standard issue handguns at all which are typically glocks or sigs that have light frames chambered in 9mm.

well thats what the training process is all about
if you think about the number of cops in america and the number of scandals, id say statistically youd be fine, but if the idea of killing someone is a no go no matter what then it really isnt the right job for you
(since your a conservative i imagine your christian and yeah there's no way you could be a christian and a cop as cops have to be willing to kill someone just by the nature of the job which of course is a dont pass go, dont collect 100 dollars, go straight to hell offense [unless your catholic then you can do some hail marys and be on your way])

While I am notably conservative my reasons are not religious by any means. I suppose I could be classified as a Christian but I don't go to church and I certainly don't base decisions or ideology on a religious faith. As a gun owner I've already crossed the "willing to kill someone" line (under certain circumstances that is). Its not as much the killing itself that scares me but the consequences of such an action (if it was truly justified or not). Even non-lethal situations give me the same anxiety (if I make an arrest that ruins someone's something but then turns out to be unlawful or somewhere along the line is wrong).
You are oddly comforting on the whole idea so I do thank you for that Lambchop. We've had our differences before and likely will again as is the nature of discourse with opposing views.
I also have an idea on how to make cops less "trigger happy" for those who believe they are - give them guns they don't like or can't handle terribly well. Granted overall this is a very dumb idea overall but would reduce the likeliness of a cop discharging their firearm. If I were forced to use for example a Glock 17 I would disdain the moment I had to grab it for anything really as it isn't the type of gun that I can handle well or feel comfortable shooting. One of my friends is pursuing this career path and while he is ok with their standard issue he does note that there is leeway but I would imagine that varies department to department.
