My teacher would make us memorize about 50 new vocabulary/ 15-25 kanji a week. Japanese grammar is easy, but the most important thing you have to do to master Japanese is too increase your vocabulary.

I'm not learning japanese. But lately I've been able to understand quite a lot. Something you could try is find japanese penpals, with who'm you can sometimes sneak in a japanese sentence or two. I have a few japanese pen pals, and although I don't actively speak japanese to them, if I know a sentence correctly in japanese I tend to use it. It's a good manner for them to practice english and for you (if you're learning it) japanese. Or you sign up for a summer course at go go nihon, which looks reeeeaaaally cool. And is in tokyo (which most otaku will like).

Currently trying to learn Japanese. I'm starting with Hiragana. I can actually understand what people are saying since when I was little I could speak Japanese pretty well. But when the years went by I completely forgot how to speak it. It's pretty fun to learn it though!
