Yes, those are the otaku stereotypes. That's because the word "otaku" is a negative term (I'm sure you've heard this before), and that means it comes with negative attributes. Some people may choose not to recognize some of these attributes as negative, and that's just fine; but they need to realize that just because they have a sub-culture doesn't mean they are looked upon in a good light by the majority of society.
Being different is great. Everybody should embrace their individual quirks, and it's a shame that society doesn't like to acknowledge individuality. But acting out in public as one sees fit (regardless if it makes other people feel uncomfortable) is wrong. I feel that this is something important to address to not only the otaku culture, but to every culture.
As much as it pains everybody to do so, everyone has to follow the rules of society if they expect to be treated with any sort of decency. This is not necessarily society's fault. As a whole, society as become more tolerant and has evolved, but it's still not a perfect system. And until it is (if it ever becomes so) it is up to every individual to keep everybody working together in a somewhat harmonious existence.
Be yourself, whether that makes you an "otaku," a "beaner," a "nigga/nigger," "trailer-trash," or some kind of crazy mix. But understand that sometimes it's gonna feel like the whole world is telling you to be somebody else.
(Please keep in mind that I used the above negative terms along side the word "otaku" because "otaku" truly is a slang and negative term to describe people. Whether or not you feel like it's a bad term is irrelevant, and I am in no way telling you to call yourself something else or act differently. Just as people within other sub-cultures embrace their derogatory titles, the otaku culture can do the same. It's from the perspective of the majority of society that I write this mini-essay, and I am in no way trying to offend anybody on this site.)

well Sad thank is the true meaning of "otaku" is Obsession or Obsessed with. And even usually in that ref is still bad. means someone who puts one thing above all else be it food, cars, clothes, movies it is a person who just goes overboard. But if you let the word define you then make the word somthing you want it to be. Like I am Proud to be Otaku and when I am called that I usually smile. But some folks are not that open about it so I can understand it being an insult to you.

I 2nd Talamar's opinion..
Even though the main meaning of the word isn't in reality a positive thing,
I feel it is more up to you how you decide to take the meaning of the word..
I am a girl, proud to be an otaku.. I even refer to myself as such..
Weeabo, otaku, Jed.. For what does it matter.. Sure, I'm a geek..
I love anime, manga, asian dramas and games..
I'm not perfect.. Noone is but I have no intentions of trying to go for the impossible when I know the outcome of the process won't do anything but tiring myself out.
Looks: average.. Personality: Bright and serious at some times..
COmment to describe myself: I'm a proud otaku.. ^^
People will always lable you and set standards for you from the moment they meet you..
But if you go over or under those standards, they will do whatever they can to push you longer down making you feel helpless..
Its why people bully.. they are unable to accept people being far from the same..
Just be yourself and be fine with that.. ^^ That is what I think..

I think a lot of us are used to the negative aspects of what we are, and the consequences of that. Looking back on it, I wasn't treated much different from an otaku in Japan when I was a kid, and I'm not treated much different now when it comes to some of my other interests. I also have a bit of racism to deal with, though less than a lot of people because I am, at first glance, euro-white. However, there's nothing wrong with the differences I possess, and so I embrace them. I think claiming otaku, or any other subculture, has its negative implications and reactions, but it's also a demonstration of strength, the ability to be true to your own sense of identity.
Just a thought.
And Monja don't call your looks average, or I'll be forced to draw you, and I'm not good at portraits yet :P lol

Well NEET I would never wanna be cause while that is a life choice that is little extreme. Most Neets are slackers that stay at home play games all day just watch TV or pretty much do nothing to contribute to society. It is like the 25 year old who lives in his parents basement without a job not going to college and bumming food and money off people. I Know that No matter how you look at that term unless you are a philanthropist it is not a help to anyone and more of a bother to most around you.

I would not like to be a NEET either. I would like to do something for myself and better humanity to some extent. Yet I would agree with the opinion said in this thread about Otaku's.

I shun the outside world as it is a hellish place filled with ape-like creatures whose grunts and screeching ruins my mood something awful, I have no shame in admitting to all my quirks and traits that define me as an uncooth otaku.
to list but a few but prominent points that I am most proud of.
I am on welfare (have been so for almost 10 years) and spend upwards of 80% of the day in front of my PC.
I have a very deceptive attitude that puts people off, I speak my mind and the truth as I see it when asked for my opinion, I do NOT hold back on account of antiquated social norms of bending yourself backwards to please the "normals".
I havent showered for a year. (This was done to have a "Magic bullet" against the holier-than-thou sustainability morons).
(I realize I will be quoting Adam Savage here:) I reject your reality, and substitute my own!
To anyone that carries any sort of banner of minimum requirements, go to hell, to those with the grace to accept the difference between me and you, I salute you, your kind is rare indeed.
Slightly off-topic: To what extreme must one go to find a female with the attitude of complete disinterest in everyday life?
If you are reading this ( I doubt you exist ) poke me, we could have fun i reckon.

Wow. Take note, as this singular quality overrides every other, and is the reason I'm here. Well played, sir.
