Rhetorical question: Did the guy harrass you or was he just persistent? There's also a difference between "Hey, I'm gonna get this girl to like me no matter what" and "Let me grab my crotch at her". Rejection is a part of the selection process. Harrassment is not. I guess I'm getting at the less you pay attention to [when and when not to use] your sex appeal, the more likely you're gonna be harrassed.

Just say you're not interested. If he doesn't take it graciously, we'll it's not like he was a friend anyways. If it feels awkward for you, just tell your mutual friend that while you'd love to hang out with them, this guy makes you uncomfortable so if possible, you'd rather not be put in a situation that involves him
