Alright here's the deal. We all know- it's sort of basic knowledge that if someone doesn't give you their screen name, real life name, social networking link, address, phone number- it's common sense not to go looking for it.
Not unless the person says it's okay is this ever acceptable.
I'm bringing this up because I received a surprising and mildly irritating request on Facebook from an anonymous member here.
I'm not mad. I don't hate or even dislike you. It's just uncomfortable. Some people put personal information for only close friends or family on there.
Look, I get that its an easier and faster way to contact someone, but we're not kids anymore, (most of us anyways) and should all know at least the basics of privacy.
I just figured it was important to give this obvious reminder before someone else experienced something like this as well.
That is all.

Sounds like something young highschool kids would do, really. Yeesh.

Really? they have an accept button for a reason. If you don't want someone to see your info block your profile from everyone but fam and friends...if you don't want them to be your friend on facebook don't add them, and tell them so. Your the one that sounds like the high school kid here, complaining in a forum instead of talking it out with that person.

Thank you very much for the obvious info digitalwolf, but this is also why I specified this was a "reminder", and there's no need for you to be rude or make assumptions. Naturally I already took care of the latter.

I'm sorry about the rudeness...but your post doesn't seem like an issue to me.

It's hardly an issue, it's to serve as a reminder.

I have a couple of friends who would do something like that (finding someone they may be interested in on other social sites) >.< They wouldn't mean any harm by it. The idea might be creepy, but you just need to politely let them know it bothers you :x which you've done, somewhat, with this post. You could just be a lil be more nice about it D: They're not criminals. They know not what they do : ( ... most of the time :x
