i think its silly to admonish affirmative action when these people have historically been denied places of power for the sole justification of racist ideologies is it ideal? absolutely not. someone being denied something purely because of their ethnicity is always going to be wrong, but alternatively, someone that has likely had less options because of things like jim crow and the crime bill that has hindered their family's accumulative wealth (i.e practices like redlining) and parental structure (i.e fathers being carted off to jail and leaving a child to be raised in a single-parent household) why is it innately wrong that biden is purposefully seeking a woman of color to become the new supreme court justice when historical racism is the reason why there has never been one? and even from a utilitarian standpoint, its good to have a wide demographic in the courts, because life experience tends to vary by demographic, and varied perspectives on a situation can cast a wider lens on certain issues

That's a critique I have of Liberal States (despite me being rather favourable to them), they promote equality in their constitutions, when the only possible path to this eschatological equality is the destruction of the public debate by certain groups of people's constant bitching because they want reparations. Blacks deserve reparations? Of course, they were enslaved and their liberties taken due to actual racism and how the market worked at the time. But throwing them into positions of power due to self-loathing is just bullshit. But women don't deserve reparations. They deserve rights, of course, but no reparations. They weren't enslaved. Unlike slavery, women's submission was a natural thing in pre-feminist world literally everywhere. Nothing to do with ideology, nothing to do with abnormal/immoral socio-economical conditions, like slavery was. Besides, what good to administration would do affirmative action in itself? I am not asking for examples, I am asking cause and effect. Because certain groups have more sensibility to their actual problems? Sure, that's right. But what else? Eventually, people ask for more, and they will never get satisfied.

Also. Olavo de Carvalho, Brazil's own Steve Bannon has died from COVID-19, an illness he denied fiercely. Ironic. His philosophic circle, which we call "Olavism", has influenced sections of Bolsonaro's government, including his sons. However, now he has died, I bet 50 that Olavism will survive in the mainstream debate until March of 2023. I have no sympathy for him, even though I admit the guy had some culture. He was a charlatan to the end.

What one could do is to increase accessibility for poor people (aka, who studied in public schools) to attend Universities, which could help them bolster their talents. A path? Make public-private partnerships for vouchers, for example. Student loans with taxpayer money is bullshit and makes them indebted right after they exit High School. Effect: Educational (and economical) discrepancies between whites and blacks are reduced Cause: Since blacks are generally poorer that whites, allowing more opportunities for poor people to enter university can help to reduce black-white discrepancies Of course, the array of disciplines must be cut. Taxpayer money shouldn't be used to fund History/Philosophy/Sociology and other... not that much required areas. Even then, that would be a better way to emancipate black people than to just throw them into Universities and positions of power because they were (unddoubtedly) oppressed in the past.

Besides, just using Affirmative Action will be just paliative to social movements. At one time, they will say it's not enough, at other, they will say it's one of their achievements due to their constant bitching. Result? They will never be satisfied. The people shouldn't be blindly subjected to the government. But the government shouldn't be blindly subjected by the people's bitching, either.

However, the solution I said above falls apart if the country has a shitty base education. As I know, the US has crappy base education. Hence why Americans have the fame of being overall ignorant.

@nebelstern you brought up reparations, im curious what kind do you think they should receive? im also in favor of reparations, we gave them to the japanese we shoved in internment camps in the form of money (20000 i think it was?) and gave land back to the native americans, and no matter how hollow these gestures really were, black people were snubbed of even that iv heard both sides of the argument for and against reparations, but when you think back to middle school history lessons (in america atleast, i doubt they teach this in brazil xD) youll remember that newly freed slaves were PROMISED forty acres and a mule. you may think that doesnt sound like much until you remember that real estate is one of the greatest investments you can make. can you imagine where these families would be today if they were actually given these acres? if you dont think that the descendants of enslaved people deserve reparations purely because of the injustices theyr ancestors faced (which id still disagree with, because people are STILL ALIVE that lived through jim crow, so its hard to call these injustices something that were purely inflicted on people who are long dead, and theres also the fact that these past injustices have still scarred families, stripping many of the ability to accumulate generational wealth, which hinders modern families) you have to agree that they were promised something that would paint a very different picture of wealth and power of modern black lives now how should reparations be given and in what way? dinno, dont think i have a real opinion on that, id just leave it to their community to decide and then allocate. cant say that any request would be too much when compared to things like the ever-increasing defense budget. i dont think women deserve reparations, nor have i heard any argument for them. women were absolutely treated as second class citizens in the not-so-distant past, but wev acquired our fundamental freedoms, and while we still face misogyny, its a shadow of what it once was, and as a demographic, we arent as bogged down as heavily as others. i am for affirmative action for woman, however, as we too were denied these positions of power. sexes have a much more complex relationship dynamic that isnt as cut and dry and racism is. the root cause of the wage gap is extremely tricky, and not something that can be fixed through something like reparations. a bit of a tangent, sorry, but i think the nuances of the issue are often overlooked. you arent just giving handouts when something tangible was promise and then revoked

"Besides, what good to administration would do affirmative action in itself?" well i added the benefit. it would give another view of a situation thanks to lived experience if the supreme court was complete comprised of poc, id object to that as well, because we need unique perspectives to view a case from all possible angles

Honestly, I am not much savvy of American history. But something similar happened here when the Monarchy intended to give reparations to former slaves after the ban on slavery, but the Oligarchies deposed the Emperor and said reparations never came. In fact, Old Republic Brazil drew a LOT of inspiration from the United States, even being a haven for the Eugenist Movement. But sure, reparations should have been given... at that time. Blacks are relatively integrated into society, despite social injustices that carry on until now (even more blatant than in the US), so DIRECT reparations would be actually counterproductive because it would only increase racial tensions. I prefer indirectly repairing injustices. Since blacks are generally poorer than whites, then make a social program for poor people that will indirectly help them out. Among other things that didn't cross my head. About the Supreme Court, putting POCs into the Supreme Court FOR sensibility just wouldn't work. It would only be paliative, and God knows whether they will serve the American Constitution or just an ideology, which is the reason the Supreme Court exists. Diversity and sensibility should be consequences, not goals.

At least here, feminists also desire for reparations because of their traditional roles in pre-feminist Brazil. They also ask for affirmative action. An example is that here, parties are OBLIGATED to have a certain percentage of its running members being women, else the party can't run for an election. That's bullshit and only serves for shady business, like "phantom candidates".
