The difference between a con and an aquarium are the number of people who will appreciate what you're going for. Even if they end up being kind, how many will get the reference and understand your dedication to the character at an aquarium? Location is key to everything.

They don't have to appreciate me for going about my hobbies. (see what I did there? LOL) And I see it as more of an extension rather than a difference. Whether or not they appreciate it, Aquariums have just as many guests as a con, if not more. There will most definitely be those who do understand, and they who do would appreciate it even more so than at a con. Quality over Quantity.
