At the end of the day the determining factor is the same as any relationship. Can two individuals satisfactorily meet each others expectations of a relationship? A LDR ultimately makes that more difficult for a variety of situational reasons. Those situations have been elaborated on here.

this happens to be a subject that i am painfully educated on
communication is most important, as it is in any relationship. making time to talk and letting that person know whats going on in your life is very important. because you cant be there in person you have to make up for that. even if its just sitting in a call not talking, its just nice to somewhat be in eachothers presence
idk if time is an issue because you work long hours or commute, but maybe try and voice call as much as possible, even if its just for a few minutes. me and my bf talk during work breaks. we ask about eachothers day and read manga while we chit chat for like 30-15 minutes
ldr's are always extra work and you have to know that that person is worth the effort. the average relationship ends after three months, because thats when the honeymoon phase is over, so maybe keep that in mind and try extra hard to be mindful of eachother

I will say it comes down to the definition of relationship.
What is a relationship to you?
If it's as simple as texting
"Hello! Don't have a good day, have a great day!!! ;p"
Each morning followed by
"I hope your day went super well! :)"
Every afternoon
Then many would consider the correspondence to the equivalent of a pen pal. Someone you don't typically know super well, but seems harmlessly friendly on the surface.
But hell, I know back in high school when I used to write letters to actual pen pals, they at least sent physical pictures of themselves before the days of filter cams.
Just a plain, take it or leave it, picture and because we had to spend actual money sending out a literal letter, each person had to take time writing out their thoughts.
No emojis to fill in the gaps unless someone was feeling artistically inclined.
To some up, I view LDRs as informal pen pals with no idea what the other person actually looks like.

I'd argue that having a child isn't the only responsibility that can hinder long term. What if, for instance, you have a house and a career that don't allow you to just move or consider it? Yes, in my case, I couldn't because it'd be incredibly unfair to my child because he's my priority in life, WAY above relationships (In one, but she DEFINITELY knows he's priority number one, as he should be.). I only said it's a young person's game because, typically a young person (Say, mid twenties and under.) does not have nearly the responsibilities that would tie a person to a place. Really, to each their own, if two people want to make a relationship work, they will find a way. I'm just impatient (Potentially selfish in that regard.), I suppose.
Also, I'm older than ya, buddy. ;)
Edit/Side note...
The honeymoon phase last a bit longer than three months, closer to a year plus. It's biology's way of trying to make sure you have a child and are protected during pregnancy. Das y Dem feels feel soooooo guuuuuud. I'm honestly trying to be more attentive to separating feelings from reality... They sure do feel good though and damn it do they make it hard to truly think logically.lol

", I became fully set on becoming only the partner who receives and welcomes a visitor rather than me being the one to travel. In fact, one of my main self-promoting points as far as the dating thing goes is: "Hey, I'm working hard to pay for a house with unoccupied rooms and plenty of space. Feel free to come for a visit whenever you're ready!"
Case and point. You're not willing to move. Sure, you'll do LDR, but under your rules only, no compromise.
