No one is talking about this, but i am running into this issue. I am moving to alaska and having to look for an apartment (you know cause no way in hell i can afford a 500k mortgage) and the rent is 1800. To qualify i had to prove i make 3x the monthly rent. Thats fucking 5k AT LEAST. Why is that? Are places realizing that soon rent will be raised that high. Hell yeah Alaska, you going to Wainwright or Richardson? At least for you being military you'll get that COLA and when I was there it was an additional $500 but I'm sure it's gone up too.

Well damn, when I left Alaska it was going up. Ahh you got Richardson so the more centralized and populated base. If you like doing outdoor things Seward is close by and they have Exit glacier you can hike and they also have an Aquarium to visit as well as deep sea fishing charters

Wait so you guys work in the military and go to a base but they don’t provide you a home? Or support you with getting one? Thats… kinda fucked up…

They provide you a home of you're married but if you're single your home is basically a room in a broken down apartment complex

Oh god daymn… sad days bro… i mean they could try to support someone to get an apartment like… you know like lighten the mortgage thing or support with some statements

You can try getting help by filling out forms to opt in for housing pay but that almost never gets approved with reason they deem acceptable

As for my branch we receive a housing allowance when there is no available housing on the base or reason to keep members living on the base. The amount they give is an average for the local area (which is very much a lie) where i live now im paid 1,000 for housing allowance but the cheapest i can find is 1,200 so essentially i have to live 3 hours away from my base to get a cheaper rent because everyone who owns housing near the base knows military guys can afford to pay more than what the government allows. I tried to get housong on my base but the wait list is a year long and i move next month so yeah as you can see the outside housing market is so fucking expensive that people are opting to live on base instead. About 140 people on a wait list for housing when you can be stationed st a base for upwards of 3 years. Yeah its crazy.

The military is slowly having its budget squeezed. I can feel that shit, they are getting rid of things such as duty station preferences as a incentive to stay in the military. They are also removing stuff like COLA which help with the incurred expenses of living abroad, they are also removing transitional programs for people who are leaving the military and want to set themselves up for success. My clinic now is broke af, and are struggling to buy supplies, like masks, cleaning products and basic necessities. No one is saying anything but in the past year the government has put a vice grip on its funding for military. They arent really incentivizing people to join anymore, which is fucking weird. Well everyone except the army who is pffering 50k sign on bonus. They also are making it harder to promote by dropping the percentage of people who will promote causing a bottle neck due to higher tenure where if you dont make rank by a certain number of years you get kicked out and ontop of that they dropped a vunch of people for covid vaccine denial and removing alot more for other stuff.
