They didn't care to defend Afghanistan because the government they had was not of their own making, it was effectively made for them by the US. If they had an Afghanistan made by, of, and for the Afghan people themselves, they would have.

Their government before the Soviet invasion was a kingdom. Then there was a coup by one of the royals cousins. Things were still stable though but after the Soviets you see the mess we have today. One of my dad's university teachers was one of the princes too. I think a good bit of the royal family came to the US.

The mess at hand dates back to the Cold War. Afghanistan was more of a zone of influence so to speak. Where the US and USSR were trying to expand their sphere of influence. The US and USSR would throw their support behind different factions or go so far as to create a faction to act on their behalf. It didn't end with the USSR troop withdrawal, the civil war that was created from the US and USSR creating political factions in Afghanistan would continue to fight all the way up to around 1996. Then splinter factions would fight from 1996 to 2001. What we are looking at is the continuation of those factions fighting.

Same people talking about us leaving Afghanistan the past 20 years are the same whiney people complaing about the state of Afghanistan. Anyone with a brain saw this coming even the people making predictions only predicted they would last 90 days. Anyone caught off gaurd by this was just plain out of touch with reality.
