Looking at when it was enacted in 1821, the tax would be equal to something like $23 today. I'm guessing it was to encourage guys to get married for one reason or another. This wasn't so much of a problem back in 1821, 200 years later in 2021 getting married is far more complicated.

they used to have that here back in the ol socialist days, if you weren't maried between that age you were taxed 5% higher than they normally were, and if you were married but didn't have a kid within 5 years it went up to 10%.

These days people just dont want to get married. Alot of marriages are taking turns for the worst. I partly think its because with the changing of times certain things have beocme exceptable such as being a stay at home wife without any skills in cooking or common house tasks. But roles for men are no different. Still gotta be breadwinner, still gotta be strong dominant protector, still gotta sign up for draft. Nothing has changed for men besides trans/gay rights.

Yeah, if marriage were a business opportunity it wouldn’t be that enticing for men. If we look at what men get vs what they give it’s just not worth it anymore. If divorced we can lose half our stuff, our house, our kids, and have to pay alimony and child support. Where when we’re married we’re supposed to be equal, until it comes to yard work, being the breadwinner, and of course picking out the house we’ll be paying most for. I think that if we’re encouraging progress in our country we shouldn’t leave men behind to shoulder the burden our grandfathers faced without the perks they gained.

@bruschettebites A lot of Eastern European countries have rather good ideas now on how to incentivize marriage and having children. Hungary made it so that if you have 4 or more children you are exempt from income tax for life. Russia has less extreme measures, but they do offer massive tax breaks and whatnot for families with two or more children. Have seven kids and you get the Order of Paternal Glory. Long story short, there are incentives rather than punishments.

Well I already know that if I end up staying with the girl I'm with right now I will never get married to her or the chances are at least 90% that I won't because she's on SSI or maybe it was disability, I don't remember the differences but basically she's allowed to own $3,000 worth of things and that includes her actual finances but if she gets married that drops down to $2,000 and if she gains more than that then she'll lose her money and she can't work a job, saying that out loud it's probably disability but regardless that's more of semantics trying to remember the proper name for what she's on.

So I just found out that Evanston Missouri cancelled the Fourth of July parade because of covid but they are going ahead with the pride parade. Sound hypocritical at all? Supposedly they did or are doing the same with Juneteenth but I haven't looked into that but if it's true then it really smells of hypocrisy and pandering.

@animekid why are you surprised you basically have American actors and yes i say actor because they arent real Americans due to them being anti-America. Like how convenient some of the most prominent people didnt even acknowledge memorial day, for example the president? No one cares about these holidays anymore because it doesnt fit their agenda and with America being founded on "racism and opressing blacks" (when literally every country started out this way at some point during the great conquests of the middle ages) America is just that much worse somehow.
