I have never worked in a job where there was a pay differential from men to women. When I first took on the job I have now, I explained to my soon-to-be-boss how much I had been making at my prior job and how much I had hoped to be making X amount of years out of college which is where I was then. I told him I would have to take a day or two to think on it before accepting. This was just me being practical, but he took it as me trying to negotiate higher pay. He got with payroll and came back with the highest offer he could give me for that position. I started my job a tier below a couple of other people who started at the time, but now am on equal footing with them and I'm still making more than they are because of that accidental negotiation.
So, yes, I think there is something to negotiating for higher pay.
In medicine, women doctors can make the same amount as men. But what we see are more men coming out of that field than women. The amount of women leaving medical school and residency is increasing, but it's not quite at 50/50. Historically, men are just more prone to going into science and technology fields than women.
At any job I've ever worked, there was a set rate and it didn't matter what sex you were. Over the years, I have seen more women workers take off work than male workers. Women tend to be the caretakers and caregivers of the households so besides taking off because they themselves were sick, they could take off because a child is sick - couldn't find a sitter and has to stay home with sick child, something the child needed and it had to be done during work hours, maternity leave however I have also seen men take off for paternity leave anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks.
There are a lot of factors to consider how they come up with the numbers. I would like to know more about the type of households they sample for the information.
https://www.epi.org/publication/what-is-the-gender-pay-gap-and-is-it-real/
"The difference in earnings between men and women is also sometimes described in terms of how much less women make than men. To calculate this gap from the ratio as defined above, simply subtract the ratio from 1. So, if the gender pay ratio is about 80 percent (or 80 cents on the dollar), this means that women are paid 20 percent less (or 20 cents less per dollar) than men. A larger difference between men’s and women’s earnings translates into a lower ratio but a larger gap in their earnings.
We keep with this convention of using median wages of wage and salary workers rather than average wages of wage and salary workers because averages can be skewed by a handful of people making much more or much less than the rest of workers in a sample. However, we examine median wages on an hourly basis and include all workers reporting a positive number of work hours. This hourly measure constitutes a limited “adjustment” in research methodology in that it accounts for the fact that men work more hours on average during the year, and that more women work part time. 5 This limited adjustment allows us to compare women’s and men’s wages without assuming that women, who still shoulder a disproportionate amount of responsibilities at home, would be able or willing to work as many hours as their male counterparts.
Computed this way using data from the federal government’s Current Population Survey Outgoing Rotation Group, or CPS ORG in shorthand, the typical woman is paid 82.7 percent of what the typical man is paid (CPS ORG 2015). Or in common terms, women are paid 83 cents on the male dollar.
Notwithstanding our limited adjustment, this is basically the “raw” or “unadjusted” gap that we explore throughout this report when we consider the ways a large basket of factors interact and create the wage gap women experience when they cash their paychecks."

I do that too, but considering I usually come in as a temp, I'm basically walking around with a piece of paper taped to my back that says "exploit me and throw me aside." So negotiating is often outside of the realm of options at my disposal. Ironically, the reason I temp rather than apply is because I suck at interviews and resumes, and am much better showing why I should be hired rather than trying to convince people I should be. Same goes for pay.
Still, sometimes they are counting on people like us NOT to speak up.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Pandus is mostly right about the gender wage gap. The feminist argument for the gender wage gap is nonsense. Don't misinterpret what I'm saying Lambus. I'm not saying that all of feminism is nonsense. I won't even generalize and say that most of feminism is nonsense. But a large portion of feminism is pee pee poo poo. I would include the feminist argument of the gender wage gap in that pee pee poo poo category.

What exactly is Trump going to do at the border? Just visit and look around? Since Trump doesn't wield the power of office anymore, what exactly can he do about the situation other than do volunteer work, donate money, or provide a morale boost?
