Yes he was sad and depressed and saving emilia was him trying to get justifcation so she would think he is amazing just like he did with his old friends. Doing more reckless stuff like fighting julius and all that up until his breaking point where he yelled at emilia

Then old subaru was up to the point where he wanted to give up and rem told him this isnt you. Basically the same words him mom told him. So rem is a major turning point

I think emilia IS satella. I mean look at the character model she even has emilia's chest pendant

Dunno she seems entirely different. altho i did think Satella would reincarnate into emilia but we'll see
