Oh, I'm not mad at all. I thought you wanted to start an argument. I apologize for that then.
Boring and lifeless, you say... I guess it might've been for you. And jumping to conclusions about that link is something that is actually reasonable, as you were discussing this with me.
The benefits of "said"? Dialogue tags are originally used to identify a speaker. They are not meant to stand out. It also depends on genre. But, in case of Narnia, it had it's benefits and disadvantages, like every book. Using "said" brings you straight to the point which character is speaking. You don't always have to use "said" but you can use other words like "ask" and "shout." Using words such as "exclaimed" and "howled" are quite the sore thumb. And dialogue tags are not actually meant to stand out.
For example:
"Archer! Dodge the arrow!" howled Sparkie. (gomenne, Sparkie~)
"Archer! Dodge the arrow!" shouted/said Sparkie.
You might argue that I may have been biases with my selection of words, but even if you change "howl" into a another word that is just as much of a sore thumb as this, it will not change the fact that "howl" stands out a lot and is weird with its placing.
To be honest, Chronicles of Narnia had a very beautiful storyline, although the execution might not have been the best, I agree on that. But outright calling it a bad book, I disagree with that.
The subject of subjectivity comes into this too. There may have been things in the story that may have been as appealing to you. The writing style may not have been appealing to you. That is also a matter of subjectivity. But thay brings me to my last point.
Why should children be reading bad books like these? First of all, this isn't a bad book. Second of all, books like this can promote imagination and creativity from a young age. You might say, "Oh! But there are better books!" True, there might be, but why must a person only read the best books out there? Bad books (Narnia is not) still have something to teach in writing. They may make us aware of what is strange and what is not. When reading, one has to be open to what they read. And Narnia is, by no means, a bad book.
It was an allegory. Have you read "Pilgrim's Progress"? If you have, you may noticed writing style and the allegory. It is fantasy, but it is still an allegory.
By the way, we'll stop here. If you send another confession, I'll ignore it, partly because I don't want something arise in this thread.
But we can continue next time.

Good, and now have the decency to show them how I was "whining like a bitch" so that the rest can make up their own mind, if your assessment was correct, or mine.

You're doing it to yourself man. You made a bad "joke" get over it. Also any joke you need to explain is not very good. You do whine like a bitch. You just admitted it.
