The election is not a direct democratic process. The election is an indirect democratic process. You vote for electors that then vote for the nominee of the party. If the the nominee dies i.e. Biden or Trump, then the DNC and RNC change the nominee. You are not directly voting for the president. You are voting for someone that votes for the president.
