It's hard, take these comments with a grain of salt. There are many factors that go into things like this. It's easy to say just go for it, you'll regret it in the end. However, letting things naturally progress to see if there would be a chance is also an option. Personally, I think you should do what feels right. Isn't your first guess usually the right one in the end?

@The End It depends on the state if we are talking the US. Usually you can have the charges dropped, however some states charge out of principle of the thing.
