currently my 2nd month of a 3month unpaid training.it feels like my unpaid training will not result in me getting hired. The training is very odd it seems that they are not serious. It's an indie game dev company and they agreed to train me for 3 months. weeks have passed and I was only tasked to do icons. and they just accept them no matter how bad they are, no critiques or what so ever. they said I will learn a lot, but right now I'm only self studying. They also have no other 2d artists, all of their employees are 3d artists. I really need a paying job and I feel anxious, feels like im stuck again. I'm afraid they'll just extend the training for 3 more months. should I talk to the boss and ask if he's really serious?

he just said if he likes the output he'll hire me but if not, then they might extend the training, but like I said the training is unproductive and I'm starting to doubt if they have a use for a 2d artist, all of their employees are 3d artists and all the works ive seen in our meetings are in 3d.

Oh goodness....not one of those companies.
Been there myself when I hunted for a job. >_>
I don't want to tell you this, but they're probably just pulling your leg.
The fact that you said they have no other 2D guys, probably just means they needed somebody to do stuff that either nobody wants to do or has no time for.
Usually, when they're serious about training you, they will give you all their attention. Since they need a good addition to their team.
Stay there just in case, at least till those 3 months pass. But I really suggest you look for something else in the meantime.
And if they extend the "training". Just honestly give them a middle finger and leave. Your time is worth more than this spectacle.
But yeah, you should at least talk to your boss before any of that. Just in case.
Let me know what he said if ya do.

As someone who used to work in audio which is another industry that just looooves its unpaid "internships", I'd tell you to get out. Never work for free, especially if you're good. Also, any place not compensating you for your work is just super shady. I don't know where you're located but I think a lot of places are now making it illegal. At least in the US that I know of.

If you're expected to work that much for free and not even guaranteed a real proper job by the end of it then get the hell out. No seriously that is borderline abusive and absolutely not worth it - your time is best spent working somewhere that will pay you right off the bat rather than busting your arse for a "Maybe we'll pay you later". And since you say you're self studying how to make games, your best choice when it comes to that is really to just make your own games in your own time while working a job that is paying you - work on what you're doing over time and then if you want to sell it when it's finished in the future at least you know you're getting paid for the work you've put in so you can take solace in the fact you're doing what you live in the end. Sure it's a lot of hard work but it's a far better solution in the long run compared to what you have now.

Well now you have experience and thats what you were there for. Put this on your cv and keep looking for new jobs since this 3 month training isn't guaranteeing a stable job. Maybe other job offers will make you feel more at ease. Hope they end up hiring you though!

Yeah put it on your cv and make sure to keep copies of the icons you've made to possibly put into a portfolio
3 months "training" sounds like bs unless you are a high school/college student and the program you are in is an internship.

I'm not experienced enough in the workforce to give good advice, but maybe after 3 months pass indicate that you cannot afford to work for free and so will be leaving the company if you do not get paid. Try to avoid burning bridges even if you internally give the middle finger.
