https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO5-N5NmAtQ Michael Sailor, in a very intelligent articulate manner described inflation as analogous to vectors and scalars. To expand Michael Sailor's analogy a little further. The Fed treats inflation as a scalar. What does inflation as a scalar mean exactly? It means that the Fed takes prices from a certain basket of goods. The Fed then treats inflation as the average change in price from the basket of goods. The inflation is one number that is superimposed to all other price changes. The Fed’s inflation number is only one magnitude with no direction relative to other asset classes outside the basket of goods. Changes in price from stocks, to real estate, to gold, etc. all have their own individual magnitude and direction that may be completely different to the Fed’s inflation rate. Changes in asset prices is better described as a sea of inflation vectors with different magnitude and direction relative to the dollar. Instead of a still scalar inflation lake that the Fed uses. I've also heard Eric Weinstein make a very similar argument to Michael Sailor. Where instead of treating inflation as a scalar number for the whole nation. You can treat inflation as a gradient field. Where you would have different inflation vectors of different sizes and different directions throughout the US. An inflation map if you will. A real-world example of inflation vectors is the price difference for the price of living in different parts of the US. For example, the cost of living is greater in Beverly Hills than in Oklahoma City. Hence Beverly Hills is one inflation vector with a certain rate of inflation. Oklahoma City is another inflation vector with a certain rate of inflation. The single inflation scalar that Michael Sailor mentioned obscures the subtleties in inflation. Not only in regional price differences, but also in price difference for different asset classes.
