No, "hi" is a horrible conversation starter. Read their info, and ask a question that requires more than a one word or yes or no response. Hell, start by joking, but the point is to actually start a conversation.

Just keep asking questions xD That's what I do. If they don't like talking about themself talk about something you do or a Hobbie you like.
