Controversial opinions

No no no and no, that is not a real debate... But it's okay if you want to call it like that. Even if it's social you need to prove your point of view, especially in between strangers. That's not how it works but okay if it's worked for you so far. A definition that might work: a discussion in between two or more persons that give their opinions about two or more topics and (here comes the key word) defend their standings. Also: -A discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints. -To engage in argument or discussion, as in a legislative or public assembly.

I mean I agree with basically all of that. That part I find objectionable is that the debate would result in no change of opinion. If both parties are engaged in the discussion properly, they should reach a climax at which they agree.

Yes, they should, but as I said, that's ideal, it doesn't happen. In the end there's always an idea or performance considered 'better' than the others, even if the others have pretty valid points apported, that's what the assembly/audience chooses. Which is why we haven't had a real debate around here.

It seems to me that what you're describing is closer to a political debate than a debate, and Voss is right I think this is semantics, we're just describing 2 different kinds of debates. But I think my point still stands.
