@chocopyro What kind of LARP to do you take part in? Fictional or Historical? o7

@mountain_tiger Fictional. I like to play adventurers rather than soldiers or mercenaries. And though I keep the base layers of my outfit rooted in historical styles for the high middle ages, everything after the layer of gamberson is either not period appropriate or is meant to evoke more of a medieval fantasy style. For example studded leather, or just the one pauldron on the shoulder. Or the Baldric which is more in the style of the age of piracy. The more you look at any of my outfits, the more you could pick them apart like that. XD There are of course people who do actually wear full medieval kits where I go, but they can be seen along side spell casters and rogues, stuff like that.

@chocopyro That seems rather interesting, how does combat go in fantasy LARP? I assume it doesn't go along like armored combat sports because of inconsistent armor levels for participants. How is use of force regulated? I had an acquaintance who did historical LARP where wax bullets or something similar were used for their muskets. Also, how are scenarios set up? Is it solely battle or is it sort of like an area where people just wander about and do as they please? o7

@mountain_tiger The closest I could compare it to from the combat sports is like boffing, ampgar, and daghir. Though we usually pull our strikes more than Dag fighters, careful not to throw our body weight into the blows and halting a charge so as not to plow into people. Stuff like that. Since I use latex swords for example, which have more of an impact, I usually swing from the wrist rather than the arm. Different larps handle scenario and combat in different ways. A good one to point to in order to explain what most fantasy larps are like would be Twin Mask. It's one of the larger ones (Its on your end of the country, actually), and they do something similar to what we do with some extra refinements. They do a good job at explaining a lot of those questions, and their rules are pretty common in fantasy type larps. You'd have different cabins (Or tents, always look up if you need to bring one before an event) and you'd have a central mess hall that we designate as the Inn or Tavern. That is kind of the center of town and where most of the main plot events happen. Stuff like NPC raids or introducing a plot specific NPC happens in or around the tavern. But you can also gather a party and quest out. Our larp does this thing where you basically rummage around the forest looking for a blue sheet of paper on a tree or something that narrates a scene like "The ground gives in beneath you and you start to plummet." Then you would take that event sheet and go to the NPC shack, which is where the NPCs and game admins usually hang out. They set things up for you, go on to further explain what just happened to your character, then throw you in. If enemies are involved, they will be scaled to the average level of the party. Now NPCs are players, unlike their name entails. But they play the roles of monsters and plot specific characters. Its a good way to really get a handle for the game, and NPCing will earn you more experience per event than PCing, as well as will be cheeper. I actually document my experiences in character if you're curious as to the kind of stuff we get up to. @chocopyro Ah, that sounds quite interesting, I'll look into it. It sounds well organized. How expensive of a hobby is it? It seems like it would have a similar cost to cosplay or airsoft as a hobby. Do you make your own armor and weapons?
