otaku SO vs Non-otaku SO?

yuzuki
Who has had experience dating both otakus and non-otakus? How has it impacted your relationship with the person? Was it a deal breaker for anyone?

Hmm, I have to say it depends on your definition of 'otaku', Sherflow likes anime, but I wouldn't classify him as an otaku. I've dated someone who didn't like anime, but that was a complicated relationship. I wouldn't want to say it didn't work because of anime though, it just didn't work because he wasn't a good partner. I have to say, though I go to conventions it's been a while since I watched anime, so it isn't a deal breaker for me.

I have been celibate my whole life, and I am waiting for the day when I feel I am ready for a relationship, or when I feel I have met the right person.

I love when people talk about waiting their whole life. I mean, if it's been less than ten years since you hit puberty, it hasn't exactly been your whole life. As for the question, it's never been a problem. Unless you're obsessed with anime or make it a point to be appalled by anime, there should not be an issue. There are far more important things to worry about, like a decent personality, unethical behavior, drugs, unstable...etc. Besides, surely there are other hobbies one can enjoy with another.

i've dated so far 2 girls who didnt like anime. it wasnt really a deal breaker but it gave us one less thing to talk about. i mean anime is a big pat of my life.

I did, and it did not turn out pretty. We ended up having nothing in common. If you like watching a lot of anime or playing a lot of video games and your partner does not like either, then it can be a little hard because of it.

Unfortunately, most of the time it hasn't worked out too well even if it got into the dating phase. I did my best to find stuff to do, but with few common interests, there wasn't a lot to talk about or do together frankly. Admittedly a couple of them were probably more physical attraction than anything, but those non-otaku experiences really drove home the message that I needed someone who could at least tolerate my gaming habits.
