Cactus are great starter plants. They can take the abuse of being neglected. Plus raising an aloe plant comes with its own benefits. I would say that you should definitely invest in some gloves for when you handle dirt, manure, etc. Not only because stuff like manure is literally poop but because it saves the effort of having to clean under your nails. Gloves also help when dealing with thorny plants like roses or black berry bushes. I think that caring for plants that produce fruit or veggies is neat.

One thing to really consider is if you have room for certain plants. Also, are you wanting to grow fruits/veggies or just ornamental plants? Some plants are very temperamental when it comes to how much or how little sun they get, not to mention some require a different ph than your soil may have. Some, you'll need lyme, which helps lower the ph. And let's not forget that all fertilizers are not the same. Also, you don't want too much fertilizer or you'll burn out the roots. Also, some require a soil that drains water, like mixing vermiculite, peat moss, or pine bark with certain soils to creat a more porous soil and a better rooting medium. Then we can get into insecticides and whether you want natural or something a bit stronger.
This is some what vague, seeing as I'd need info on what you want to grow. As for me, maybe some flowers in the window sill.

Your welcome. :) What sort of things are you interested in planting?
I want to have a strawberry patch someday. Strawberries are super tasty.

Strawberries are an excellent first plant to grow. You can grow them inside(They need plenty of sun) in pots or just make a big area outside where they can just take over. And, they are perennials, which means they can come back year after year with proper care. Don't make the mistake of planting them to close to each other, they'll choke each other out and die.

I live in a REALLY crappy apartment otherwise I would take that suggestion and try doing it indoors. My neighbor growing up use to grow snow peas. Those were cool.
Ants are feisty ladies Ed... really feisty.

Ed,
A little boric acid goes a long way. They'll bring it to the queen and kill the colony from the inside out.

Casts of ant colonies are amazing.. not sure using molten metal is a great idea for most people.
