It's easy to look at a brute like Takamura and think that the only thing holding him up is the weight of his own pride. But it's so much more than that. He has his ambition to be the best yes. But he was also the shining star in the Kamogawa gym. And the coach...after what the old man did for him in giving his fists and life a purpose he feels like there's no way to ever measure up to it. He stays the best to keep the old man happy. So one day he can look up and see his champion is above it all. He brought in Ippo, Aoki, Kimura, and a great deal of people int he gym and stands as a pillar of unyielding support to all of them. It's not just that he doesn't want to lose. He can't afford to ever lose. It's like that scene in OP when Zoro refused to take even one step back with a knife in his chest. Takamura is trying to be a star dude. (Read chp. 1173 to get a better idea of that). Honestly hearing the way he talks about boxing. Takamura is my favorite character in HnI. And it's precisely because he CANNOT lose.
