I only play te games in Nuzlocke style these days, so picking the water starter is usually the only viable choice, water has best resistances usually. And historically, they have been the defensive ones of the starting array, with the exception of that frog thing. That being said, in black and white, snivvy was the stronger choice. Also, picking a flying type is not a good move in Nuzlocke, because there is usually some really common bird around that you pick up for that.
