Yeah they were live plants. I had kept a few of them up until a few months ago.

Plants help spawn algae and feed some of the fish. It's a nice plan.

Exactly, it also maintains a proper water balance that the fish are more naturally used to. It's a catch twenty-two though because your tank can get overrun with it. You just gotta find the right balance between lighting and plant food and such. And now I'm going off on a tangent lol...
