Please do not tell me how stupid/fake/special snowflake I am. I've heard it all before so don't waste your time.
If you're here to be tolerant, ask respectful questions, tell me your kins, ect then hello!!
My main IDs right now are Sho Marufuji from Yu-gi-oh GX and Ichimatsu Matsuno from Osomatsu-san
I also have a few theriotypes as well. I identify with owls, opossums, and aye-ayes

Okay so first off I have to say that otherkin and therian experiences are very personal and very unique. They vary from person to person. So this is how I experience and understand the phenomena.
Otherkin a blanket term for people who identify as something other than human or their current physical form. It can also be used more for kintypes of mythical oragins. There are many subtypes of kin and people can be kin for just about anything. More popular kintypes include elves, vampires, dragons, mythical/fictional races, angels/demons, animals, plants, compters/A.I., stars, robots, and even canon characters. This can stem from ideas of reincarnation, soul traveling, or being a median. Kin can also be as a way to cope with mental illness, but whatever a person believes it’s still valid.
Therian is another name for an otherkin who identifies specifically as an animal that exist/has existed on earth. This one has a strong sense of reincarnation and past lives. It’s pretty common for people to believe that souls are shared cross species. Therians are very connected to their past lives as animals. They experience memories, astral limbs such as feeling tails, ears, wings that they had in the past life, as well as leaning towards behavior that is influences by their theriyotype. For instance all my kintypes are nocturnal so I feel more comfortable being awake at night. I’m an opossum so sometimes I think that smells others find repulsive are yummy (gross, I’m sorry). All therians understand that in this life they are in a 100% human body in this life. It might feel dysphoric at times when there are memories of past bodies but most of us go through out day to day without it bothering us.
People who are dragons, gryphons, ect also experience the same things that therians do but they are filed under otherkin since these are mythical creatures.
I’m not sure about people who identify as elves and more humanoid races since I’ve never had this sort of feeling.
I also can’t talk much about stars, glaxay, computers, robots, ect. So I’m not really sure how those are experienced.
Now for one of the more controversial kin identities, fictionkin. This is when someone identifies as a race in fiction specifically. Such as a twi'lek from the star wars universe, ghouls from Tokyo ghoul, hobbits specifically from J.R.R Tolkien’s works, and so on and so forth. These people are a person who comes from that race in a past life of identifies heavily with them but isn’t a specific character. They are their own unique being that has existed with in those universes not in the stories that we have a window to. Sounds pretty in line with basic otherkin stuff right? Well here’s the controversial part. Some people, such as myself identify specifically as a single character(s). Such as someone being Sasuke from Naruto. The reason for kinship can be anything from similar personality to past memories that might not be shown in the series.
This one gets sort of muddled when it comes for back up and is a little more personal I feel. Personally I feel that the media we view is a gateway to another universe. There are a lot of controversies on this taking credit away from the author. But personally I think that a universe is created new for every series since there an infinite number of universes. Since universes are sliding parallel to one another and time doesn’t match. It doesn’t matter if a series was created in 2009 and you were born in 1990.
Another big reason for fictionkin is copeing with mental illness. Using kin to cope doesn’t make it any less valid than a reincarnation or soul bond theory.
But a person who is kin with Sasuke is literally Sasuke incarnated into this universe from their own. There are also infinite universes of the canon of Naruto. So one Sasukekin may experience memories and shifts differently from a double. Doubles are a very sensitive subject in the community. Imagine meeting yourself from an alternate universe, very uncomfortable to be honest.
Most fictionkin have parts of their identity called ‘kinsouls’, a kinsoul is the reincarnation of the character that specifically resides/is a fragment of the persons soul. This kinsoul may come forward to ‘shift’. Which is when that fragment is the most predominate personality with in the person. This is not to be confused with a fictive alter.
A fictive alter is 100% separate and a whole person where as a kinsoul is a part of the kinfolks soul and can’t function alone.
Sorry this is kind of long, but I really hope this helps you understand what otherkin is!

Oh, so it's like an imaginary friend brought to life, but more of a personal self identification of said creature/thing/person?
One more question.
How does one differentiate between imagination and reality? I mean, the mind is a very complex thing. I'm honestly curious. I'm trying to remember what it's called, but I looked up something very similar to this, only in that version you could interact with the other entity and it could interact with you. I'm certainly not knocking this, I'm just trying to grasp it on a logical level, but I realize these kinds of things aren't meant to be understood by logic as we know it.

First part: no, there is no "imaginary friend". The best way I can describe it would be like how the native Americans held animals in such high regard. That their souls were an important part of their being, living inside them. It's not that you "believe you're the animal/creature/thing", more of the mentality that their soul resonates inside you.
Second part: That's more of a philosophical question that doesn't have an answer, Asshat.

Yeah, nothing about this is imaginary at all. Saying something like that to someone who's kin could cause a disassociative episode. Otherkin is really something more metaphysical and personal too.
As for the imagination and reality I really think that's up to the individual to decide where to draw that line. But if someone says they believe in something then it's real to them and that should be enough to get respect from others.
