You want a good dare? I have one. Draw faces on both your hands. Pretend they're you're best friends. Name them Jerry and Michael. Imagine a life with them. You grew up in a small rural town, but you all move to the big city together. You all dream of starting a manufacturing business together, and you do at the cost of the life savings from all three of you. Things are great for the first five years or so, but China's devaluation of their national currency hits you hard, and you're forced to declare bankruptcy. You're still great friends, but you all work at different places. You dream of the day you can all work together and spend time with each other again. You work to actualize that dream. You take up two jobs to collect the funds necessary to startup your business again. The extra shifts means you miss out on a few nights at the sports bar with the guys, but that's fine, because the day will soon come again when you're all having fun at the Country Club golf course. Your new obligations means you spend less time together, and you slowly drift apart. A few years pass. Both of your friends get married and have kids, but you don't. You're still grinding. Still trying to grab hold of that dream. Soon you realize you're 43 years old and you forgot why you were working so hard. You take a look at an old photo album. Old postcards from your best friends show them on vacations with their family. Jerry and Cynthia at Disneyland with their kids, Jerry Jr and Negan. Michael in Hawaii with his wife Amanda and daughter Heather. You're in a single room apartment by yourself. It's in a seedy part of town and infested with bugs. You don't have a car, you take the bus and the train to work. Your living situation and your commute were sacrifices you made in order to help get back into business. Your friends didn't even want to try again, they told you multiple times, but you didn't listen. You refused to accept it, and you still do. Your obsession caused your friends to cease contact over a decade ago. One last try, you think. You go to the casino and bet all you've saved so far to try and get enough to start your business with or without them. You sit down at a roulette table and bet it all on black. It lands on red. You're out of money and have no family or friends. You don't even have the money on hand for the subway ticket back home. You see the lights of the next train lighting up the dark tunnel.
