I draw occasionally but I'm not really an artist. The things I do draw are mostly just anime characters or another character in a slightly different art style. Anyway, best piece of advice I can give as a amateur would be look up how to draw videos on Youtube. They have helped me a lot. Before that I used to just try to draw stuff the best I could. Now I know there are actually techniques to do and shapes you need to make for the wire frame outline thingy. Also look up how to make your own manga, that seems like a pain though. It takes some equipment and patience to be able to put one together. If all else fails, just draw chibi! Easy chibi!

You know there are sites for Visual Novel fanbase. I don´t remember it but there were people there drawing stuff for others. They gave instructions on how the certain character should look like.
BTW. If you have a great story you don´t need to focus so much on the art. as long as story, character and setting is good Some might ignore the characters.
You also need a program to write them on. or some kind of engine. Try Ren´Py. I don´t know about it but another site recommended it.
Making visual novels usually requires a team. So i think you should look for that.

A light novel might be a good idea~ there's less stress on the drawing side (': but it's up to you ;3
I can't really think of any tips which might enable you to illustrate characters instantly well~ as mariahaise said earlier in this post, just keep drawing!! drawing from life and observation will really help you to develop your understanding of composition, form and structure~ and good luck! ;DD
