Just though I'd share the first page of my manga.
I made it today, it's very crude and there's nothing exciting going on, but it's gonna be a sad story, I want it to look barren, and I'm no good with backgrounds and effects anyways.

I don't think he's being condescending per say. Depends on how you look at it. He never said your art was bad, so don't pick on yourself thinking that's what he said.
You will get better the more you draw, so if anything, take his words as advice to draw more and continue on with your manga. ^^
