Dude, I've been called a beaner, illegal, spic, border-hopping-chicken stealer, anything you can think of by both racists and in humor, and so have a lot of my friends. As I said, it's based on how it is spoken and relationships. Some people get pissy even if it's said in a joking manor, some people get offended no matter what, however, the history of the word has become a term of endearment over time in the Hispanic community because people wanted change. Racists words can change from hate to love over time if there is a will.

Saying the term nigger is racist, in itself is ignorant.

No one ever thinks I'm Mexican. I even fooled a Middle-Eastern woman, she came up and spoke in her native tongue and insisted I was her race.
Nigger/nigga has been used in the black community as a term of endearment. Whether people choose to accept it as such or accept it as racist based on context and personal moral standing is completely up to them. I personally believe that there has been semantic change with the word within the black community but it's still a very touchy word for both blacks and non-blacks, and with good reason. Once again, my personal belief is that change can happen based on will, and the use of this word will become slim or will change its meaning.

well where I'm from no one uses beaner as a normal slang word to salute people. maybe your friends are other races, so they can't truly understand how we feel, i came here and lived in the ghettos and people dont take those words lightly for both hispanis, blacks, asians etc unless it's some one from your own race saying them.
ik yall are like that dosent make sense, but thats exactly the reason, yall are not minorities so yall will NEVER be able to understand how it feels to be discriminated
or maybe its just different in other places
