Well lets say the system breaks down into something like this as a pie chart: top left is offensive physical traits, top right is offensive magical traits bottom left is defensive physical traits, bottom right is defensive magical traits
If you spent mostly all of your points into the bottom half you'd end up with something like a Paladin. If you spent your points in the bottom left and top right you'd end up with something like a Dark Knight. We could even further break this down into an ancestral tree type system where you'd choose a weapon and armor type for phsyical traits and be able to put points into certain aspects only allowable by those weapons, like say guns vs. bows. bows could specialize more for aoe and guns for single targets.
I think when it comes to races the less is more approach would be a big help, it's very difficult to try to portray a large bioverse at intricate levels, things tend to be left shallow and unfulfilled. Humans, Elves (let's just lump all elves together despite us all knowing how goddam different they can be), Animal people (refer back to elves), and I liked the idea of machine people, fits really well with the future/fantasy mashup theme.
