This last weekend was Meta Con in Minneapolis and I went as the "AZN REDNECK COSPLAY REPAIR" guy, wearing a tactical vest packed with gear and tools to help out fellow con goers should any problems arise from their cosplay costumes (despite the small size of the con, I did help out a significant number of con goers) plus urban camo pants, a tactical shooting t-shirt (to help keep from overheating), black combat boots, black Mechanix work gloves (to protect from the hot glue gun and sharp sewing needles) and custom embroidered hat that said "AZN REDNECK COSPLAY REPAIR" on both the front and back. I had also developed a character to go with the outfit, an Asian Redneck (I'm still trying to break out of character as I've been defaulting to the redneck accent). I plan on improving on the outfit in various ways.
The first way I'm going to improve the outfit is to get a new tactical vest. My current one is built for southpaws (as in, the cross-draw holster is suited for left-hand draw) and I'm right-handed. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but there's some issues that I'd have to sort out given what else I plan to do (explained below). The new vest I'd get would not only be right-handed, it would also utilize an entirely different layout which I personally would think would allow me to more evenly distribute the tools around the vest. Finally, the vest I'm looking at would work well with the second part of the improvement I'll explain below.
The guy who inspired me to do it gave me the advice to carry a tall sign around with me and label each pocket with what item/tool(s) it contains. I plan on doing the latter (labelling the pockets and pouches), but as for the tall sign, I have a different idea entirely.
The biggest issue with the outfit is getting noticed (you'd be surprised how many times I'd stumble across someone or a group looking for costume repair help, and they'd tell me that they've been looking for me or the other repair guy for a long while). The other guy (the one who inspired me) is very tall (6'6" or so) and for him, carrying a sign around works very well, plus he's noticeable because he towers over most other con goers. But my problem is that I'm short (5'6") and I also don't want to carry a sign a full foot taller than me everywhere I go within the con. Instead, I had a rather unconventional idea: RGB LED tape and scrolling LED name tags (one on the front, the other on the back) and be essentially a walking billboard for cosplay and prop repair (my services are free, btw). In other words, for you WWE fans, I'd be going full-on modern Chris Jericho (he has an awesome jacket with programmable RGB LED's in it).
I'd get the LED tape and run it along the edge of the tactical vest (front and back) and have a wire that goes up from the back of the vest to also power some LED's on the embroidered hats too. I'm debating what to use to control it, either an IR remote control which I'd have to carry on me at all times, or my android smartphone, which might drain the battery faster. On the front and back are those fancy LED scrolling name tags which will have the whole "AZN REDNECK COSPLAY REPAIR" scrolling on it and something else (can have two separate messages). To finish off the outfit, I'll also switch up the colors of the camo pants I'd wear (few things say redneck more than camo pants) to black/grey/white urban camo, to red/black camo, to orange/grey/black camo, to blue/grey/white camo, etc. That way, each day of a multi-day convention I could switch up the colors of not just the LED's, but the rest of the outfit as well.
Plus, when it comes to the raves, I can get crazy with the LED effects. It's a win-win anyway you look at it.
Now if only I could find a decent battery-powered or recharagle hot glue gun. It's unusual how difficult it is to find a good one.

Update because I can: Nope, not going with RGB LED's, going with EL wire instead. Though it's only single color, it's cheaper, better suited for battery usage, lighter, and honestly, it looks cooler with a uniform glow along its length instead of individual light points like an LED strip would have. Plus it's easier to bend and shape so long as it's not extreme. So, I look forward to using it in my upgraded cosplay repair outfit.

Katsu is my next con, and for new cosplays I will be doing Ty Lee from Avatar with a group of friends. I'm also doing femNagisa from Free with a group of friends, Annie from Attack on Titan for a photoshoot, femLevi from Attack on Titan, and Nanaba from Attack on Titan. I'm hoping to have my thief dressphere for Yuna from Final Fantasy X2 ready by then as well. :)
