You know, a lot of people try to figure out why a person would do such a thing, or that they are being selfish etc. we can't have all the answers because they aren't here to defend themselves nor can they explain why. I think people commit suicide because they are depressed and depression makes it hard to see the light in most situations. They become engrossed in how horrible one aspect of their life is and they can't see the forest for the trees, and it makes it difficult to cope with life when all you can see is the bad.
The best thing you can do to prevent a suicide is to check in on those you care about whenever you can. Ask them how they are doing, and if they are not doing well try to listen. If they seem to indicate that they want to commit suicide, realize this is serious. You can't know if they are trying to manipulate your emotions or whatnot, but assume they aren't because if you do assume and ignore it you could loose them and it's better to not take a risk of that. Once someone is dead you can't bring them back. So, treat any indication or desire to commit suicide very seriously, people shouldn't joke about wanting to die, feeling that way isn't normal, so don't overlook it.
If you can't be there physically, but your loved one seems to indicate they are going to commit suicide, you can actually call local law enforcement and tell them that your loved one is at a high risk of harming themselves. They will at the very least come to that person's home and do a welfare check. Some local law enforcement will first call the person's home to see if they will answer and then ask them if they are okay or any necessary questions. If any officer is doing a welfare check they are allowed to enter the home without due cause. You can even do this is you are nearby but think that they may be at a high risk of harming themselves.
Be there for them, if you can. I had a friend that told me he was going to commit suicide, but it was while I was at work. In retrospect I feel I should have had someone take over for me, and gone after him, called the police, called another friend to go to him. I just thought he was in a bad mood that day and he'd go to sleep and forget about it. I feel like at that moment he just needed someone to be there and talk to him. I wasn't able to do that, and I lost a friend, his parents lost their son, his child lost his daddy. If you can be there, and help your friend the best you can, do it. Just keep telling them how you care about them, that they are okay, and that whatever it is they will be able to get through it and there are people that care about them that will help them through it.

Well, during a welfare check if they believe the person is high risk, they will actually put that person in their car and take them to a mental hospital voluntarily/involuntarily. They will be assessed by a doctor and that doctor will determine the right direction in handling their current situation. This involves a mandatory 24hr stay in the hospital even if they say they are okay. So, if a person needs treatment for depression that would definitely be determined by the doctor, and they would determine what kind of treatment that person would need being impatient/outpatient. I had a friend that actually was forced to spend an entire week in the hospital where he received therapy and treatment. After that he was treated with regular hospital visits and medication. I had another that only stayed 24hrs but they determined that she could get state funded outpatient treatment for her condition.

Yeah, also a lot of those that are active duty also suffer and they are not being treated for whatever reason. It's really unfortunate. They've gone out and risked our lives for their (meant to say something else, changed my mind. lol) freedom, and who can take care of them? They deserve better.
