They dont hurt that much, depends on what youre having done and where. The kanji on my chest took about 90 minutes total and only really hurt near the bottom. Chest doesnt hurt, arms on the outside dont hurt and the inside forearm you can see, that didnt hurt either. Its just like someones lightly scratching you, nothing major!
