Love Hina follows the story of Keitaro Urashima, a young boy determined to study at Tokyo University and fulfill the promise he made to a childhood friend he barely remembers. Unfortunately, his parents can no longer support him, and now he has to manage his grandmother’s all-girls dormitory while cramming for his college exams.

Negi Springfield is a ten-year-old wizard from Wales, who dreams of becoming a Magister Magi (Approximate Latin translation: "Master of Magic"), a special wizard who uses his powers to help normal people, using covers such as working for NGOs. Negi's reason for becoming a Magister Magi is to find his father, Nagi Springfield, the legendary mage also known as the "Thousand Master", who is believed to be dead.

The story is a shonen comedy that takes place in the Kanagawa Prefecture, and centers on Keitaro Urashima and his attempts to fulfill a childhood promise that he made with a girl to enter Tokyo University together. However, he has forgotten the name of the girl he made the promise to and hopes to be accepted into Tokyo University in order to find her.
