The confrontation between the Earth Alliance (Naturals) and Zaft (Coordinators) originated in economic trouble had reached an impasse. War couldn't be stopped by that point, and thus this story begins one year later when Heliopolis, a resource satellite belonging to a neutral nation, is suddenly attacked by a Zaft mobile suit force.

AC 196. Peace has spread through the Earth Sphere and the colonies are at peace.

Satoru Mikami, an average 37 year old office worker from Tokyo with no girlfriend, was asked for marriage advice by Tamura. After meeting him and his partner Miho on the street, he is stabbed to death by a passing robber.

Tomoya is labelled as a delinquent at his school because he is constantly late and skips classes, but he seems to have little care about how others perceive of him. Everything in his life seemed dull and unchanging until one morning he meets Nagisa Furukawa on the road to his school; he finds her muttering to herself to give her more motivation for the school day.

Events in After Story take place immediately after the end of the first part, but extends into the next ten years, where Tomoya and Nagisa live together as a family. Life continues on for Tomoya.

Set on the fictional year of 2010, the world has been split into 3 superpowers: The Holy Britannian Empire (the Americas; also called Britannia), the Chinese Federation (Asia), and the European Union (Europe and Africa; previously known as the Euro-Universe.
