Angel Beats! takes place in an afterlife high school, which acts as limbo for teenagers who have died and experienced traumas or hardships during their lifetime.

After witnessing the “Little Giant” of Karasuno play in a national championships volleyball match, young Hinata Shoyo instantly gets inspired and decides to revive his school’s volleyball club. Although managing to force some of his friends to join his team and even participate in a tournament against other schools, Hinata’s inexperienced team terribly loses their first game against the prodigal “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama.

The passive high school boy Aikawa Ayumu gets killed during a spate of mysterious serial killings. However, he is resurrected as a zombie by the necromancer girl Eu, whom he had befriended just before dying.

The game is set at a special, elite high school called Kibagamine Academy (lit. Hope's Peak Academy) which only accepts students of the highest caliber in various fields.
