Unlike previous series in the Gundam franchise which are set in the "Universal Century" timeline, Mobile Fighter G Gundam takes place in an alternate "Future Century" universe. Within this timeline, much of mankind has abandoned a ruined Earth to live in space colonies.

Sixty years after the curtain fell on Zeon, Earth once again finds itself threatened by a colonial uprising. The Federation is powerless before the might of the Zanscare Empire, but a civilian resistance group is determined to fight back armed with a mobile suit which invokes the legend of the original Gundam.

In UC 0096, Banagher Links is caught in a tug-of-war between the Earth Federation and Zeon remnants for possession of Laplace's Box, an item which holds the secret of the Universal Century. He finds himself taking part in the struggle when he is entrusted with a prototype mobile suit, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.

Three years of peace have followed the Earth Federation's victory over the Duchy of Zeon. Now in the year 0083, the last remnants of Zeon begin their plan for revenge by stealing a prototype Gundam armed with nuclear weapons.

The great war between the Earth Federation and the Duchy of Zeon is almost over. At the neutral space colony of Libot, the Federation secretly constructs a powerful new Gundam mobile suit.

Universal Century 0123. After a generation of peace, the Earth Federation has begun to build new space colonies to house humanity's growing population.

The year is Cosmic Era 73. The Bloody Valentine War fought between the PLANTS space colonies and the nations of the Atlantic Federation has ended and an uneasy truce has settled upon the Earth sphere.

The confrontation between the Earth Alliance (Naturals) and Zaft (Coordinators) originated in economic trouble had reached an impasse.
