Long hours helping his mother run their family business, a fishing boat store, has left him without the time to make friends, and so he remains an introverted loner, doomed to be beaten day in and day out.

Makunouchi Ippo is an ordinary high school student in Japan. Since he spends most of his time away from school helping his mother run the family business, he doesn't get to enjoy his younger years like most teenagers.

Ippo Makunouchi is a timid but hardworking boy who spends most of his time helping his mother with their charter fishing business. Ippo mostly kept to himself in school, and was always picked on by bullies as a result.

Set on the fictional year of 2010, the world has been split into 3 superpowers: The Holy Britannian Empire (the Americas; also called Britannia), the Chinese Federation (Asia), and the European Union (Europe and Africa; previously known as the Euro-Universe. It’s been one year since the failure of the Black Rebellion and the supposed death of Zero. Britannia has assigned Area 11 a “correctional education” status, where Elevens are made an example of by brute force, to try to prevent any future uprisings and suppress rebellious thoughts.
